HISTORY OF VELANKANNI CHURCH AND IMPORTANCE OF VELANKANNI FEAST

The history of Our Lady of Good Health, Velankanni, dates back to the 16th century. In September 1771, Velankanni, which was earlier a substation of Nagapattinam Parish, was elevated to the status of a Parish. The grand shrine, facing the east, underwent renovations in 1920 and again in 1933. On November 3, 1962, Pope John XXIII raised the shrine to the status of a Basilica, recognizing the apparitions of Our Lady, the miraculous statue, numerous reported miracles, and the stunning architecture of the church. The extension of the Basilica was completed and opened in 1975, further enhancing its magnificence. Later, in 1985, the small chapel at Our Lady’s Tank was built and blessed, adding to the sacred heritage of Velankanni.

The Velankanni Church - Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health also known as the ‘Lourdes of the East,’ has a long history of miracles and visions of Mother Mary. For centuries, devotees from across India and abroad have visited this sacred shrine seeking blessings, healing, and spiritual comfort. Situated near Nagapattinam, the Velankanni Shrine has become one of the most significant Christian spiritual and devotional places in India.

Every year, during the Velankanni Feast, more than eight lakhs of devotees gather to celebrate centuries old traditions, nine day prayers (novenas), and sacred rituals that make the Velankanni Festival both spiritually uplifting and culturally rich. This grand celebration is not just a religious occasion but also a symbol of faith, unity, and devotion, attracting people from different walks of life who seek peace, blessings and divine grace at the holy shrine.
